I was thinking it would be nice to get someone who has a lot of experience doing boats and see if they could write an article about boat care.

I could write one for you. It would just take awhile before I have the time to do it properly because of all the other articles that I have to rewrite. I'm going to include a boat detailing and motorcycle detailing article on the new OCDetails.com when I get it finished and I'd be happy to post them here for feedback first.

no.....LSP on both of those was Colinite fleetwax......

both were polished out with 3m wool pad using megs #49 compound then #44 compound on 3m polishing pads follwed by 3m Finesse it on a foam pad then a hand coat of Megs #45 polish and 2 coats of the Colli mentioned above.....the burgundy on the first boat was wet sanded with 1000 then 1200 then 1500 prior to polishing.....

Wow! Very nice! I did a boat about in the shape of that first one and was not too thrilled with how it came out. We did not wet sand though. Do you find wet sanding to be a must on a lot of boats?

wet sanding is a must if you are doing darke colors that are badly faded....i always try a section first to see if the gel is a high quality one that polishes right up....i would have to say its a 50/50 weather i do or dont.....

Thanks! This was a dark blue boat and was a freebie. I might have to use it as a test boat for wet sanding next year.

When correcting the gel coat on boats do you also have the same issues regarding holograms and so forth with a rotary polisher?

It seems to me that a boat would not be as "finicky" and a rotary is almost a must have (use). I could be entirely wrong though because I have NEVER touched a boat with a polisher.

However I was looking at my neighbors boat wondering what I could do with it. It's dark blue at the top but very chalky looking. I am not sure that I have a polish that would touch it. I guess though if I wet sand first M105 would remove the sand marks

Ghost28, great work on those boats by the way! You made them look GREAT!!

wow, that first boat is the same color as mine, the white and burgundy.
Could you really explain what and how i would wetsand mine so i dont ruin it or scratch it up? i really dont have a clue. I tried using my powerwasher and it did absolutely nil, so you understand where im coming from.
I would greatly appreciate learning the real and proper ins and outs of restoring my 23 footer to its pristine beauty, so it can look as good as it runs.

thx

Yea I'm wondering about these GelCoats and If I could get away with using a PC and maybe some M105 or Poorboys strongest polish?

if they are in mint shape than you can use those polishes on gel but if its faded then bust out the megs 49 Mrine and 3M Wool....

gel is tough and very hard so it usually need something with a little ooomph.....

M105 and 4" Orange pads cut through it pretty decent. I did have to build up quite a bit of heat to start to get the cutting going.

I may have a boat commin up soon. I will go look at it friday. If I can get away without wet sanding can a PC do a good job correcting? Can I get similar results with a boat as I would a car?

Sal it all depends on how bad the finish is. You should be able to get it to shine real well and remove swirls with a PC but you're going to need a strong polish and more than likely 4" pads. If you're doing a whole boat then a Flex or Rotary would be a much better choice.
