well, about a month ago I traded my bronco for an 85 325. Mechanically, I'm almost done with all of the repairs, body wise, I have a lot to do. It had been color changed at maaco a few years back from cosmoblau metallic to crappy black. I believe that the paint was good, but the guy wanted black. It is peeling off in a few areas. I would like to get the origional color back. Is this possible? with a wheel and an abrasive can I strip the black off? It wasn't prepped very good to begin with, I can remove paint with my fingernail. The color is sweet imo, I would love to see it again.... any advice?

That's a tough question! It is hard to say without knowing what they did to prep it and everything. Maybe someone can offer up some sort of advice or suggestions.

being that it was a maaco job, I imagine that the least amount of prep work possible was done. It is scheduled to be off the ramps in my driveway at the latest next saturday, so the body work is next..... not in a huge hurry with that part though. I just can't stand having a car on blocks in the driveway for too long. I look like a hillbilly in my short driveway

well, for practice, I have been slowly wetsanding away my shadowline on the car. Why anyone would paint the moldings and bumpers that are a bright nice aluminum to black I do not know. I have been using 800grit for the first sand. I'm about half way through the rear bumper, and it only took a week and 1/2! Looks fantastic so far. I have not come across any damage that was hidden yet. I imagine that after all of this I will be a master sander and may begin with the paint. at my rate, it should only take 12 weeks to sand the car  maybe I'll just leave it black....

ok you're right, I need to get a ton of pics hosted, and I just did. here ya go

http://motorcityoutlaws.com/userfiles/turnofftheradio/bmw%20006.jpg some really bad painting here.

http://motorcityoutlaws.com/userfiles/turnofftheradio/bmw%20012.jpg so the pics look worse than in person. as you can tell there is quite a bit of terrible trim paint to be removed, and you can see where the origional color is escaping through the black under the trim and trunk.

happy now!

I wish I did! Maybe try Joe Hilla jhill68 on xceedspeed.com, he is from Ferndale as well and might have one or know someone with one. If not, talk to Jim at Forward Motion Motorsports, he is a great guy and I am sure he could help out.

bummer. thanks anyways. I pm'd jim. he did the suspension on the prelude, so maybe he will hook me up. if not maybe I'll just get a cheapo one somewhere.

well, rear is sanded and bright, needs some polish to remove some fine scratches, no noticeable damage to the bumper so far. bolts are out that were broken in the block. had to jack the engine up with the motor mounts off to get a regular drill in there. i hate to borrow stuff from a shop unless absolutely totally necessary. maybe by next weekend or so I will be able to move it to take some decent pics. depends when I get a few parts from MA.
