View Full Version : Post your best "magazine" shots!

I'd like to start a little contest down here. :) In going through some old pictures I found a bunch that I thought were pretty high quality. Almost like the pictures you see in magazines. I'm not talking about the Auto Trader magazine either. ;) What I'm looking for are full car shots that one would look at and say " Wow! They should use that picture to advertise the car with!" Money shots of side angle reflections in the shade of brightly lit backgrounds are great, but that is more of a process and product showoff and not necessarily advertising for the vehicle. See post #11 for some examples of the kind of pictures I'm fishing for.

So what I'd like to do is have you post your best money shot picture that looks like it belongs in a magazine. The winner will receive either two cans of CD2 engine detailer (if you are willing to pay shiping) or a custom OCDetails hat (photo coming soon).

Contest Rules:

1. Photo must be your own original work.

2. License plates must be blurred out.

3. Photo must be of resonable resolution. ("reasonable" being defined as not so large that you have to scroll to the side, but not so small that you can't make out the details. Let's try and make them around 800 pixels wide at least.)

4. Photos must be posted on or before noon on March 15th. Judging will take place that day and a winner will be announced on March 16.

5. There is no limit to the number of photos you can enter, but they must be submitted in seperate posts.

6. By subitting your photo you also agree that it may appear on OCDetails.com in featured articles or gallery pages. You will always be properly credited for anything used on the site.

7. Photoshop enhancements are limited to original photo manipulation only. No adding elements from other photos allowed. If you would like to post details about the process and products that you used, then I would encourage you to start a seperate thread in this forum with your picture and the details beneath it. This forum is going to become a busy place very soon once I get the last bit of code figured out on my site. Things have been crazy for the last few months and I haven't been able to pull the trigger on it, but I have great things planned in '08 with OCDetails.com. :)

Please post any questions you have here, or email me at Anthony@OCDetails.com if you need clarification. If your photo needs to be cropped, edited, or sized in any way, please let me know and I'll be happy to help you out.

I modified the rules just a tad. As far as picture size goes, let's shoot for something around 800 pixels wide at least. Much smaller than that and it is hard to make out a lot of the details. :) Quality does count for something, so let's try to avoid posting cell phone camera pictures at car shows and things like that. ;)

I sure hope we get more interest in this. I may have to cancel the contest for lack of interest if we don't get some pictures in here. :) There has to at least be some pictures out there that can compete with Smokin, right?

These are great pictures and I don't want to take anything away from that, but what I'm looking for are full car shots and not just reflection shots. These are great pictures because they really show off what is possible on white, but they aren't exactly pictures you would see in a magazine advertising the vehicle. Reflections of brightly lit backgrounds on paint in the shade are not exactly what I'm looking for in this particular contest. Again, I don't want to take anything away from how cool these pictures are, but I am looking for full car shots. I should have made that a little more clear to begin with. :) I'll go back up and clarify and post a couple examples. I really do think these are all cool pictures though. They just aren't what I was looking for exactly.

These are sort of what I had in mind. It doesn't have to be the entire vehicle, but enough of it that we can tell what it is and would show off the lines and beauty of the car. Post any questions or email me if you have any concerns.

About the only cool photo I have. I'll look around some more, I must have a few more. Not the best full sun photo but it was raining that morning. I spent 2 days getting the truck ready for a show but when I woke up to drive 100 miles to the show it was pouring. I didn't even bother going.

Slim pickens for me, I have only done 10 or so cars, and they are AVERAGE cars, nothing Hight Dollar.

This is actually the car I just finished.

Btw that is not me, that is the OWNER. A fellow coworker.

Hey, that's ok. "normal" cars are in magazines too. :) Judging won't be based on the value of the car at all. It's almost more of a photography contest than anything else.

Only a couple days left to post your pictures! Surely there is some interest in showing off your work. There is a whole photography forum up there full of pictures that would work.

Last chance to enter! I have to say the competition is stiff on this one! We definitely have some shine masters on the Detailing Forums!

Wow! You guys sure do know your shine and your photography. I had a couple other people participate in the judging with me and we have determined that BLUEZERO is the winner with his outstanding photos in posts #14 and #20. Congrats!!!

OCDetails is going to put together a calendar for 2009 and that will be comprised of photos like some of the ones that have been posted in this thread. I will be updating on details of this Calendar in the future, but definitely be thinking about that as you take pictures of your vehicles this year. :)

Congrats again to BlueZero! Let me know if you would prefer a hat (white or black) or if you would like to talk about shipping a couple cans of CD2 to you. :) Thanks again to everybody who posted!! You do great work!

I just got my hat! Thanks much!

I tried it on and it's perfect. I hate the ones that cover your ears or you have to wear not pulling it down all the way. The embroidery is top notch too. I'd post a photo but I only have my camera phone here and haven't figured out how to get the photos off it yet.

^^^ That is exactly how I felt when I got them in. They are just the perfect size and depth for most heads. I hate hats that sit a couple inches above the ear and feel like a light breeze will blow them off, but I also hate the ones that feel like ten gallon hats with a ton of space at the top even when it is pulled down as far as it can go. These are designed so that your head fills them up perfectly and they are just super comfortable to wear. :) Enjoy the hat!

Get more pictures in the same location at another time of day. High noon is a hard time to get good pictures of dark cars. Go in the morning or late afternoon when the sun is lower and you will get amazing shots I'll bet. :)
