View Full Version : How obsessed are you really?

I'm just curious what the most OCD thing you have ever done with a car is. For me it would have to be the truck that I detailed after the sun went down. It was October and about 60 degrees outside, so it was just warm enough not to be uncomfortable, but still chilly enough that I didn't want to be outside forever. The sun goes down early in the Fall and I had miscalculated how long this job would really take. I sort of assumed I would get caught in the dark, so I brought my lights for backup. So there I am... 9 PM and I'm outside polishing a black truck in the dark with nothing but my halogens to light the way. lol The neighbors thought I was crazy, but the owner was duely impressed. The job came out great looking too. Without any other reflections to get in the way of the true shine of the paint, it is amazing how easy it is to tell when you have made progress.

I've done two things that I never thought I'd do.
1. Jan 2006. I took my car down to the hand wash, cleaned off the crud from winter, drove the car home to my heated garage and used S&W to remove the film and finished cleaning the surface. Then tossed a coat of IW#845 on.
Temp outside was mid 30's calm partly cloudy day... Garage was in the 50s..

2. Spring evening, the weather was perfect, a little humid, but nice, pulled the car into the garage and proceed to toss a coat of 3m Performance Finish on my freshly washed car until about midnight.

I read about someone on another site who was washing his car when it was so cold outside his mitt froze to the car. He gave up and went inside. His mitt stayed stuck to to the panel over night.

I guess thats better than your tongue sticking to metal trim on the car.

I wish the heated side of my garage was a little roomier to do more cold weather detailing.

I'm hoping to open in up a little more this summer and organize my junk.

The problem I have in Iowa is we get some humid days and if you start towards evening detailing your car.
The due ( sp? ) settles on the roof of the car.

I did the neighbor's car ( senior citizen ) for free a few years back on a day when the temp was pushin 100 and humid. I worked my @ss off to make it look good. I don't think it had seen a wax ever... It was in rough shape. But man did it turn out nice with my limited tools I had at the time.
My wife vacuumed out the interior and clean up the seats /dash/ windows.

My Neighbor was almost crying when I was done. She loved it...

man I had to take a ton of breaks to drink something and change shirts I was sweating so bad.
I went to bed that night exhausted.

Looking back, I know I would got that job done in 5 hours vs. 8 with the newer products I have now.

That was my most extreme job.

I spent 4 hours cleaning the under carriage of a car with small brushes. Lucky it was on a lift, however I'm over 6' and still had to crouch.

heh, wish I had seen this one earlier. For me, winter washing with a hose on the lawn over winter months. Hooked up a hose inside the house at to the hot water feed for the washing machine and ran in through the dog door.

I ONR now...

1) At least 1 time every week I wash all the of my trucks. I use a foam cannon/pressurewasher, my neighbors must think I'm nuts by now. I have done this in the winter anytime it won't freeze right away.

2) I wash and wax anyones car that will let me.

3) I wash/polish/wax my lawn tractor (and even the ATV's)

4) I have taken the PC to the bathtub-shower surrond

5) I polish and wax my guitars and basses

6) I will do that for anyone else that will let me.

7) In my car I will look at other peoples cars and think about what process I would use to fix there car and make it shiny. I have passed this on to my wife, too.

8) I built a 30' X 48' pole barn complete with 100A/220V electrical and concrete floor for a detailing workshop(well, it has other uses, too)

9) I wax my trucks almost evertime I wash them, even though I know it's not needed

10) I wash my Lightning more than I drive it. It gets driven only nice days, never in the rain, yet I wash it after almost every drive.

**This is a short list, I'm sure I can come up with more!

Once I started claying my truck and it started raining, I just kept on going. Worked out good, I didn't have to spray much lube on.

Let my door between my apartment and attached garage open for two days so it would be warm enough in there to detail my truck in the winter. Hey I didn't pay for heat. lol

Test every product I either make or buy on each surface of a vehicle just to see what might be possible

use my favourite in and out detail spray sealants with my rotary and orbital for two hours on one panel to make the paint richer, wetter and extremely deep
