I have been sticking to them this year though. I got a new routine down and everything!
Is the Dewault better?

I dont think either one is better or worse...I like my dewalt, I know wifehatescar likes the slow start option on the makita and it weighs less. The only thing I wish the dewalt had that the makita has is the handle that wraps up over the machine. That is where I like my support hand to be located. I hate it being just on the front end of the body, just not as comfortable as a handle would be.

But alas, that too is a project I have to get started on at work...custom made handle...I am thinking Titanium...ohh so light but strong...and no I am not bending a titanium rod (no smart ass comments :D)...I am going to machine a block on a CNC Vertical milling machine and have it anodized if I can... any color suggestions?

Scott, let me ask you this....
Will I be able to use the rotary with a swirl remover and go right to the protective coat? Or will the polisher leave swirls that the PC will need to get out?

All depends on your technique if you can go straight to an LSP or not. If I was a betting man (and I am :)) I will say you will be able to go to a LSP after an hour or so of really playing around with the toy (on a flat surface like a hood, roof, trunk lid) Vertical panels take a while to get used to.
With the information you already have and from using the PC you should find it pretty easy to use. The biggest thing is how much polish to use, how fast to move it, and "steering" it. you will find out which way it moves the easiest really fast ;)

Honestly the ONLY car I have found so far that I need to go to a pc to finish is MY car (SIGH)...I have used the softest pads from LC(blue). and it will leave faint traces of holograms, that is using no pressure except the weight of the machine and a very light polish. With MY skills with the rotary I do have to follow up on my car with a cyclo or PC.
Every other car I have done no problems, even black ones are just fine with no need to go back over them.

My car has incredibly soft clear on it though.

Thanks for the info.! I just ordered it from Coastal Tools. $179 plus $7.5 shipping and it comes with the storage bag and two wool pads. I will stick with foam pads for now though. :)

sounds like a good price! I think I bought mine for around $200 plus backing plate. You know the routine find a beater or body shop (you can kill two birds with one stone by visiting a body shop ;)) and ask for a black hood, they pay people to haul them away so they will be more than happy to let you have one. Go to town on it! try to burn the paint!! see just how long you can buff with different polishes/compounds before you get through the clear. You can gain a lot of information and skills by purposely abusing a hood. check out the edges of the hood too...see how long it takes to burn through an edge of a panel where the paint is thinner.

do a little wet sanding on it and throw that wool pad on and give it a try at removing sanding marks.

Yeah, I will for sure be practicing before I go to town with it! :)

I bought a Makita kit too. I liked the fact that it was lighter than the Dewalt, Porter Cable, and Milwaukee models (of course, I have girl's arms :P ). I've only had a chance to use it once so far under the close supervision of a rotary expert. I'm hoping to get the chance to play with a beater car soon and try out some different pad and product combos.

Yeah, I can not wait to try it out!

I love my Milwaukee. Nice angle on the trigger and the weight it is probably the lightest one out there

Hopefully it comes early this week so I can try it out! :o

Got it today! I tried it out on a car and think I might have burnt the paint.

What do you think?

Actually, I tried a few spots on the fiance's ZX2 and I love this thing! I used a white polishing pad and SSR2 to try out a few spots. Got the scratches out real nice and the paint is smooth as glass! Tomorrow is mom's Regal.

 Yep, that paint looks like it has seen better days!

Glad to hear the first pass with the rotary went well. Rotaries do smooth out paint much better than random orbitals. I need to find another beater to practice on before I'm confident enough to use it on a better finish.

 I thought I went too fast!

I have a guy at work that has been bugging me to detail his Saturn for him. He is not a clean freak and just wants the interior done...I am sure I will find rats in there. But I told him I would do the exterior for free if I could practice on his car. He said, "What is the worst that could happen?" I replied, "I could burn through the paint." he replied, "Oh, well it is a Saturn and all plastic body parts so go for it."

Semi tuned it ;) I'll probably have a wideband on it all week next week seeing where it's rich or lean. It feels pretty good right now but I don't trust the map completely since I don't know it's source. You'll probably have to hold the laptop in your lap while we drive. I'll be datalogging like crazy.
