View Full Version : Hmmm ... polishing pads and backing plates?

I obviously didn't put much thought into this beforehand, and as I'm about to go outside on this beautiful day we're having (thus far) and start cleaning, I sit here looking at my Porter Cable polisher, the (backing) plate that came with it, and the two polishing and waxing pads I purchased from Car Brite, I realize now that the two don't go together.

The two pads I purchased don't have velcro any type of peel-off adhesive on the back, just a semi-stiff felted cardboard plate and a hole in the center ... how the hell do I make these two work together? I assumed the backing plate that came with the PC could be used with both the sand paper provided and polishing pads, but maybe I was wrong, and I needed to get a separate backing plate. The detailer where I work uses Car Brite's pads with an identical Porter Cable polisher, lol, my bad for not figuring out how earlier.

For anyone who has the PC orbital buffer (7336SP 6" rand. orbital sander/polisher), is the foam polishing pad that came with the polisher okay to use, or should i steer clear of it? At least it has a backing plate already stuck to it which I can just screw into the polisher. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, -Adam.

Do not use the PC pad, throw it away.

Have you tried sticking the foam pad to the plate? From your description it sounds like they should work? The pad should have a felt type material on it and the plate has velcro.

hehe, I'll toss the PC pad out. The backing plate that came with the PC doesn't have velcro on it, rather just a somewhat hard rubber material with the screw plate on the back of it to attach to the polisher. I think it's primarily for sanding, because the one piece of sand paper provided has a peel-off on the back, which I'm assuming is covering adhesive on the sandpaper itself. I guess I could glue the car brite pad to the backing plate, but I'm just going to go out to Murray's and get a velcro plate. Thanks ;)

Yeah, you got the pc for the sand paper disc. We carry a nice PC velcro backing plate. :)
