I don't do a lot of detailing in the winter, but most of that is because it is too damn cold in my garage to do anything. I've been thinking about getting a ceiling mounted heater to warm the place up when I've got a project to do. My question is what type of heater would be good to heat a normal two car garage and not cost $50/hr in electricity to operate?

Your best bet would be a gas heater. Electric heaters just seem too inefficient. I'm looking at having a gas heater installed next year before winter.

I have a natural gas ceiling mounted one and I love it. Works perfect for me. My garage is a bit bigger than a 2 stall, the heater is a 45,000 btu. It costs me about $0.60 per hour in gas to run on high. I only heat my garage when I want to do something in it. It's a R-11 walls R-19 ceiling with 10' sidewalls and one ceiling fan. I figure it runs me a few bucks to heat it for a day.

Mine is a different brand but basically the same as this one... Mr. Heater Natural Gas Garage Heater — 45,000 BTU (http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200307959_200307959)

That is the style I was going to get. My uncle has one and he is a painter so all of his paint stays in his work van. He keeps the garage at 40 all winter so the paint won't freeze. Same thing I want to do with my detailing supplies instead of carrying them to the basement every winter and having to get them out and put them back down there whenever I want to use them.

My garage is partially insulated, so fortunately it never gets cold enough to freeze. 40 degrees is a pretty constant temperature in there even when it is ten below outside. I need to finish my south wall and then I'll get the heater. I only need it up into the 60s to work comfortably, so maybe I'll have to look into that heater. Thanks for the suggestions!

I have a NG heater too, mine is a bit big at 60k btu for a 3 car garage.
It sure is nice to set the T stat to 55 deg and work away in comfort.
