New member with questions about compound and polish.
I just bought a Makita 9227 kit that was on sale at Amazon and would like to know what other supplies would I need. I have a car that I painted then wet sanded the orange peel to the best of my knowledge. Now I'm ready for compound and polish. Would someone recommend some compound and polish for a complete novice. This will be my first time doing it so any help/recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I would strongly recommend M105 (compound by Meguiars) and Menzerna Polishes. However, if you truly are a "complete novice" it makes me very nervous to recommend the use of a compound and a high speed rotary. Be very, very careful.

Thanks for the advice. I'll take it REALLY slowly.:p So I would use the M105 as a compound then any specific Menzerna polishes should I use? The car that I will be working on is a 1966 VW Beetle Convertible painted Yukon Yellow.
Is this a good package to buy?

The M-105 doesn't use diminishing abrasives and is some really powerful stuff. The speed of the cut and final finish are fantastic but it is certainly capable of causing significant damage if you work it too long/improperly.
Checkout Autodetailingsolutions.com for all things Meguiars that you can't find locally. If you're in Hawaii, Ranney/PakShak is in Honolulu and has a great reputation plus a wide selection of products.

I would just go online and get the M105. Check out pakshak or ADS. Which Menzerna to use would depend on the extent of the damage and on the paint/clearcoat. Always start with the least aggressive combo. After compounding with M105, I usually move down to Menzerna IP or SIP with an orange or white pad, then Menzerna RD or Micro Polish with a white or black pad, again, depending on those factors mentioned.

Thanks for the response. I forgot to tell you that it is Single Stage Enamel.

Hey we're on the other side of the cascades from you. The paint is single stage enamel that is about 6 months ago.

I go over to the westside all the time, and I lived over there for a bit too. I grew up in Socal, moved to portland, then Tacoma, then Yakima lol.
Has the car been sitting for awhile wet sanded or did you do it recently? Like Doc said it's scary recomending A compound to someone with little to no rotary experience because so much can go wrong. That's a major task for any novice. What do you have for pads?
As far as compounds go M105 is very good but does have a learning curve, I use Presta Ultra Cutting creme for major defects and sand scratch removal (removes 1200 grit) but again this is very aggressive even with just a polishing pad.

Thanks for all the responses. So the decision is M105 compound and I think I will try the new Meguires M205 as suggested by the autobody supply shop in my area. LOL well I hope to tackle this project when the weather gets warmer.
