Anyone ever make their own with eggcrate? Im mean the eggcrate lighting material btw :) I have a big old sheet and figure it should work. We use it in Saltwater aquariums so i cant see anyreason why it wouldn't work for washing?

Actually I used to use one made of the egg crate lighting cover material and that is where Grit Guard started. The only thing I did not like about the lighting material is that it was VERY sharp from cutting it to fit and Grit Guard actually has not flat surfaces. All of the surfaces are rounded so dirt can no way rest on it.

Yeah, I did not think of it either until I ripped a sponge and was always cutting my hands on it.

Yep, no hurt in trying!
Also, I cut mine with a dremel and a saw. Make sure to get ALL of the burs gone or they could get into the mitt and scratch.
