View Full Version : Polish or SSR's?
I just can't understand whether I should only polish, or try the SSR line to bring the swirls down to a minimum-to-none.I have Rightlook's polish(old formula) and not sure if to get the 2.5 & 1. Please help!
Jose :D
SSR's are polishes. Some manufacturers call them polishes, some compounds, some swirl removers but basically they are all polishes.
I am not sure how aggressive the Right Look formula is so I can't compare it to anything else. Four Star Body Shop Compounds and Optimum Polishes seem to be the favorites lately. The SSR line is also good.

Thanks, Bob. Righlook polish is very fine, to the point I feel no grittiness on it. It still cleans the paint pretty good, though, and barely any dusting... Need to try it with the PC as soon as I get it. Trying to become little by little a PB junkie, but we'll see if I try later the Optimum polish and compound.
Which pad would you use with the compound? Thanks in advance!

The pad choice all depends on how bad the paint is. If the paint is really bad and a heavy to medium cut polish with a polishing pad is not cutting it I would step up to a compounding or heavy cut pad.
Did that make sense? Sometimes I feel like I confuse people when I explain things. LOL

Now I'm sooooooooooooooo lost... j/k I got the point jejeje I have he Corolla which the paint is not bad, just some minor swirling, now we just got a 99' Honda Civic green, and the paint has medium to some heavy swirling in some spots. I will post pics of them later.
Thanks Bob for getting me lost.. I mean... for the help! lol

You know, I have never tried it.
You know? I was about to get a garage when we were looking for a new apartment, and we saw this very nice place just around the corner from where my wife and I live now. I was so tickled... But the condition of moving was to have a downstairs bathroom, and it wasn't possible because there's no basement... :( Oh, well, we're staying at this place until we find a house to purchase or we get divorced lol! But I'm happy where we are now...

I tried the SSR line and I quickly switched to Optimum on the Polishing and Compound products. PB SSR dusted a little too much for me. As for the sun usage I don't know yet. I would think it would be fine because I found it had better working time than SSR. Also a note, I have heard that Honda has soft paint so I would definately start with a polishing pad and the lightest polish SSR 1, Optimum Polish, or 4 Star Swirl Remover.

That's good to know, because I saw so many swirls I was about to put up with 2.5. But we'll give a shot to the OP line and see what I can get. Thanks Russecu!

I'm a big fan of ChemicalGuys Cut 2 polish and PB SSR2.5 because of their ability to cut well and leave a near-perfect finish, but as Russecu said they definitely dust quite a bit. Optimum polish is known for no dusting...and it should have a nice cut.

But does anybody knows if the Optimum line can be used in direct sunlight? I have no garage, and by that, i will go with PB. Dusting is not a big deal for me, but if I can avoid it, much better!

You can def use OP with a PC in the sun, prob OC too (only tried OP so far).
I would not use a rotary in the sun though with any product if you can help it...

That's the main question I had! I got it answered! Optimum it is!!!! Thanks!

Not sure why so many people have dusting issues with PB products...
I have yet to encounter dusting problems with SSR2.5 and I use that a lot. I'll throw this out there to see if process is the problem and not product for those who get dusting.
-Always use a polishing pad with SSR2.5 (it'll remove a ton of swirls, if not do another pass or bump up to another product)
-I use 7.5" LC pads and apply a bead of product around the middle of the pad
-DO NOT PRIME WITH ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE PRODUCT ITSELF (very crucial)
-Apply a thin bead of product around the pad for each section of the car
-Spread it at whatever speed you want, Work it in at Speed 6.... don't be afraid of speed 6.
-Work it in until very clear
-Wipe off
-Admire no swirls
-Go to finer polish (if needed- with the polishing pad you most likely don't NEED to follow up but it wouldn't hurt).
All that being said I'll say this again, I use Poorboys with the PC and Optimum with the rotary. Take my typing for whatever you want but this setup give me the best results and are the most user friendly. OP seemed to be very oily and a little more difficult to remove because of the oils when used with a PC. Even with the rotary it had a long work in time but still more difficult than I expected it to be removed. However I have not tried the new OP (I have it... weather and time not permitting) so maybe that'll be easier to remove?? Don't be scared OP isn't like glue on the paint, it'll wipe off pretty easy but requires a little more elbow grease and more swipes.
^^^wow!^^^ That is great info there! Thanks a lot! :thumbs up: Now I was looking at the store, I found the CG Compunds and Scratch removers... figures... what's the difference between them, PB's and OP & OC??

No problem!
Every product has different characteristics with not only looks but applications. I have a few products that I use exclusively and I could detail with those products with my eyes closed :D. SSR2.5 happens to be one of those products and IMO, it is too great of a product for people to give up on because 'it dusts too much' This problem could be resolved from the above steps. I forgot to add something to that list when I wrote it... I remember it now... if the product begins to build up on the pad, take a MF or terry towel and wipe the product off of the pad. I don't use a foam brush because the product is still wet on the pad and removing it with a towel is more effective. Exxcess product on the pad may contribute to the dusting as well.
I haven't used the CG products... there are literally 100s of polishes out there and most of the time you'll get 100 different opinions of what products to use. That being said, I wouldn't be afraid to try any polishes found on this site. Even though I haven't tried them all, I haven't heard any negative reviews of them.

I have used both SSR and CG polishes. I didn't see any difference b/t the two. I used the SSR1 and the CG equivilant to SSR2 or 2.5. Both for me had the same characteristics of dusting some. Did have great results and will probrably try them again one day. I have the product might as well use it.

So I can go with CG polishes instead of the SSR's and save myself a couple bucks?
Thanks Budman!

I would say so. Like I said I couldn't tell a difference b/t PB and CG polishes. This may help also: http://www.danaseforums.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=704
