Today I was claying the car I was detailing, white mustang, and I noticed something different. At first I was using some DP 4-in-1 mixed to clay bar lube and detail spray mixture and the claying was going along pretty good but I seemed to notice it was taking a little longer than usual and it seemed to be detiriating the clay some. So after half of the car I switched to my usual Danase Speed Shine and it seemed like it helped the clay perform better and without as much effort. Has anyone else noticed something like this? I was using a yellow claybar that I had got from Adam's long ago. Bob I think this is my favorite detail spray so far. Could it have been that the Speed shine gave better lubricant or what? I liked what I experienced and I know what I am going to get a gallon of.

The only clay I have used in recent times is Meguiar's, which I'm told is Clay Magic.

Both the mild (blue) and medium (red) reacted far better to QD as a lubricant than they did to plain car wash soap/water, even in heavy soap concentration.

While I've not used the products you mentioned, I have always found QD works better as a lubricant. At a minimum, wash soap reduces the effectiveness, but seems to make the clay deteriorate in most cases.

The Danase Speed Shine does lubricate really well so it could just be it lubricated better. Also, I have noticed, in the past while experimenting with different home grown clay lubes, that some break down the clay. I think it might be degreasers of some sort in some products that cause this.

I have used Meguiars QD before also and it didn't seem to do as well as the Speed Shine. Personally I really didn't think that the lube would make much difference especially since I have read of people claying while washing and using soap and water for lube. But I went over the rear bumper again using the speed shine and it removed the rest of the contaminants that was left with the other lube. Has anyone tried ONR for their lube? Pete I think the clay I was using was from the company that no longer makes clay b/c of the dispute between the companies. Its real stretchy and easy to kneed.

Ahh, the good stuff...I've heard all about it, but never did get my hands on a bar.

Meguiar's has 3-4 variations on their QDs. I've used Final Inspection and Last Touch. They do OK for me. I've read that people comparing them both to PoorBoy's QD (is there more than one?) say the PB's wins for slickness, especially as a lube.

ONR...good question

Here is what my car looked like after a Clay Barring, Polish, Wax.

The lines you see are power and cable lines above the car.

The dot you see in this one is part of the same power and cable lines.

Here is another job I did. This is my g/f's mother's car.

Actually, I was told that Clay Magic has a patent on all clay bars.

Auto Magic is the owner of Clay Magic and they are the one's that hold the clay rights ... which is crap, IMO .

What spray can you use for the clay, if you run out of the stuff you buy? Is it the same as a QD?

Yup, QD is basically the same stuff. I find it to be a slightly better lubricant than what comes with the Clay Magic kit.

I am claying a car tomorrow, part of my first paid detail, I am throwing in a claying of the car as part of the package. I went out and bought a clay magic kit, I heard you can use the clay on more than one of the cars. I have a wealthy supply of QD.

Thanks.

As long as when you fold the clay over on itself the new surface doesn't have any contaminants you can keep using it.

One more word of advice for you: rip the clay in half just in case you drop it you'll have a spare handy.

Auto Magic is the owner of Clay Magic and they are the one's that hold the clay rights ... which is crap, IMO .

There are only a couple manufactures of clay and patents protect the technology, with some subtle difference
in consistency and firmness, a recent court hearing found components of the “elastic clay” to be a patent infringement and the judge ordered sale of the product to be halted. (In the United States, Auto Wax Company Inc. (now owned by Illinois Tool Works Inc.) owns the US patent rights (No. 5,727,993) and reads thus- "Conventional compounds comprising an elastomeric resin mixed with abrasives used to remove protrusions, projections, and/or strongly adhered foreign matter from vehicle surfaces"

Auto Wax owns six patents relating to clay products and provides private label clay too many of the detail industry’s leading companies - http://www.automagic.biz/specialt.htm (http://www.automagic.biz/specialt.htm) As a result, all of the Polybutene (Polyisobutylene) or plastic clay being manufactured now comes from the same factory in Japan, which as the only patent holder has a monopoly on the market. Meguiar's, Mothers, Sonus, Zaino, et al get their clay either from Japan (Source Chem. Inc. one of Japan's biggest clay manufacturers) or from a US licensed manufacturer.
