I am a total noob when it comes to detailing cars. I had a internship at a local car dealer about 5yrs ago working in the detail shop but i completely forgot everything i learned back then. So now I turn to you guys to offer me tips, products, and tricks. I will do everything shy of a buffing wheel(dont think i could EVER trust myself). Anyway i have a 1991 eagle talon, this car used to be Brads car so he knows the shape of it(very good shape and thats how i want to keep it :))
Anyway I know the basics of washing a car. For a basic wash i would like to know products to use. Then there is wax. I would like to know a system for this(besides ninja turtles :)) Also special products I should consider for older paint.
After all that if there is some specialty stuff I need I will just post a question.
Also if someone is in g.r. and would like to help me sometime that would be sweet.
Thanks
TJ

how bout this offer. Seeing you are a friend of Brads I will give you a hand with whatever you need in terms of detailing...I am in Grand Rapids. I have a rotary, PC and a cyclo. I am positive after a little while you will have confidence using a buffer. I own almost every product out there so if there is something you want to try again just let me know.
I will be here until July so when the weather warms up we can get your car looking its best. Give me a shout some time. 616.240.2433 is my cell, just ask for Scott.

TJ,
First thing, welcome to the site! Second thing, congrat's on forgetting everything you learned at the dealer. Chances are high it was wrong anyway. ;) Or at least not the proper way to do it.
Ok, if it is the car I am thinking off it is Dave's old Talon right? Well, Dave's then Brad's and now yours? That paint was in darn good shape so it should not be too hard to maintain at all. I highly recommend taking Scott up on his offer and getting with him before he leaves the state. He is a good guy and would be a good person to learn from.
For washing a car I will recommend you get yourself a Grit Guard Insert for starters. That will keep your wash mitt from laying in dirt. For a good car soap we have two right now. Poorboy's World SSS and Shining Monkey Car Wash. Both are excellent products.
As for a wax....The first step is to make sure that you surface is clean and good. I HIGHLY recommend you get a clay bar. I would wash the car, clay bar it, go over it with a light polish and then top that off with a sealant or wax or both.
If you have any questions or anythig feel free to ask away. Someone on the forums will be able to help you for sure. :)
