I have a 2005 Dodge Ram that is black that needs detailed bad. I've been reading about how the new dodge paint is a "scratch resistant clear". Meaning it's supposed to be rock hard. Anybody know what type of pads i should get and polishes. I've been on autopia for a little bit and they said i should be using some yellow cutting pads at least and some new polishes that are designed for scratch resistant clears. I was thinking of getting optimum polish and compound they don't think that will cut it. What are your opinions?

I would get either the edge kit or the LC pad kit from Bob. I have yet to find cheaper prices then his. If you go with a yellow, it will micromar, and you will need to then step down to a orange, etc. I don't know how much you have looked into products but use the least aggressive first and move up or down from there. I have not used optimum so I can't help much there. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. The swirls aren't to severe i guess. But you can see them in the sun.....not like it was washed with steel wool or anything. What products do you use for hard paint? And i would be getting the 5"ccs pads from bob just trying to decide on which colors and some products. Also as far as some products i have now i will be using Klasse AIO and SG after i get done compounding. Then probably some natty's blue on top.

Ahhh Black Ram lots of paint! lol I am in your shoes. Mine is '03. I do not think the Rams have the SRP on them. Maybe the '07 or'06. Mine doesn't for sure. Check out your paint code and it should indicate something like the SRP. Hey I will get mine and post it and you post yours. That way you know if your is different in some way. Optimum products are nice and no dust. I use LC pads but have heard good things about Edge pads. I am sticking with LC for now. Yellow cutting pads will be a little harsh to start with. I have one and have never used it. Mostly use the Orange, Green, White, and Black pad for very light polishing. Sealants and wax like suggested about looks good. Maybe add Danase Wet Glaze awesome on black.

Nattys will look nice on the black. Can the wet glaze be used with a sealant?

Since the glaze is an acrylic(?) glaze it plays very nicely with a sealant. It actually puts down a little protection itself.

OK maybe my truck does not have the hard clear but what about our '07 black caliber? Probably does because i will be using these products that i buy on this also. You still think optimum is a good brand for it? What compounds do you use?

My go to compounds now is Optimum Compound, Polish and Poli-seal. Sometime I skip the polish and use poli-seal as final polish. Hyper-compound my be good for hard paint I do not have that. I first used poorboys and although it worked it dusted alittle too much for me. I have some 4 Star bodyshop compounds haven't used them yet but am planning on it. I also have po106ff for when I meet some SRP. Optimum from experience or 4 star from what I have heard. Menzerna is expensive. I have no idea about an '07 Caliber. I would think that an SCP woudl have alittle different paint code than a normal paint. Oh yeah be patient when working the polishes/compounds with the PC. It take a little longer than rotary. Thats one thing I found out when doing my truck. Seems like you will be there forever since it is sooo much paint.

No problem Menzerna po106ff
and is that supposed to work really well on hard clear? Is it a heavy cut compound or is it more of a fine cut polish?

I opened the bottle to see how it felt and man you can feel the polishing agents in it. Feels like a compound but its in the finishing polishes.
